This Memorial Day weekend has ushered in a new wave of excitement at the box office with two significant new films battling for first place, and various holdovers still performing strongly.
In addition to the two new films that opened on May 23rd, Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch and Paramount’s large scale, action-adventure Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, there are several holdovers in theaters previous weeks, such as Final Destination: Bloodlines, which had a distributor-strong opening last week and is still proving popular to horror fans. Marvel-the ensemble film Thunderbolts*, and the musical drama Sinners, still seem to be drawing audiences, showing a strong experience at the box office after several weeks and not being disposable films.
Some additional films that have garnered some attention at the box office include the family-friendly A Minecraft Movie, which continues to do well, as well as the sequel The Accountant 2. And the newly released Hurry Up Tomorrow did have a decent opening.
This Memorial Day weekend at the movies looks to be good, and it was good to see variety in so many genres of films, but there are plenty of options for moviegoers to enjoy beyond the top-grossing films; this one included the dark comedy Friendship, and horror release Clown in a Cornfield and even thriller Until Dawn, along with special event screenings, like Kiki’s Delivery Service: Studio Ghibli Fest 2025.
